The first ever organic Islay single malt whisky will soon be coming to America!

Bruichladdich Distillery just announced they’ve made an organic single malt. What’s more, managing director Mark Reynier tells me this morning that their American labeling should be approved within a week, and bottles of the whisky will be available in stores and online soon after through their distributor Winebow. Can’t wait to get my Scottish-American white trash hands on a bottle.

If you’ve ever been to Scotland, it’s hard to imagine the country producing anything that wouldn’t be worthy of organic status, with the notable exception of deep-fried Mars bars. This eco-friendly ethos seems especially true of Islay, an island off the southwestern coast whose volume of dramatic landscapes are in curiously inverse proportion to its population (main industries are making whisky and staring at birds, aka birding, which may be related). www.bruichladdich.com

This organic Hebridean hooch joins compatriots Benromach Organic Malt Whisky and Highland Harvest Organic Whisky, a blended whisky rather than a single malt, among organic whiskies available in the U.S.

Does anyone know if any of these Da Mhile whiskies are available stateside? www.organicwhisky.com Come to think of it, does anyone know how to pronounce the distillery’s name?

New organic spirits popping up like bar flies

When I started noodling around several years ago with cocktails made from organic ingredients, there were a handful of spirits certified organic. These days, I seem to run across new ones about every month. Here’s an organic distillery I only learned about today – Bainbridge Organic Distillers, located on that preposterously picturesque island just off Seattle. From info on their work-in-progress website and a handful of news stories, they’re apparently the first certified organic distillery in Washington state. Very cool. Can’t wait to find out how to get my hands on some of their whiskey, gin and vodka.
